Safety Check

CAUTION WHEN COOKING
Keep cooking areas clear of combustibles and wear short or tight-fitting sleeves when you cook. Keep the handles of your pots turned inward so they do not over-hang the stove. If grease catches fire, carefully slide a lid over the pan and smother the flames, then turn off the burner.

The Shepherdstown Fire Departments Rescue Engine 3 received a first place award at Winchesters Apple Blossom Parade Fire Truck Competition. The Rescue Engine competed against other rescue engines from the tri-state area and was named the best looking rescue engine.

On the 31st of April, Jefferson County Fire Companies, 2,4, and 1 were dispatched for a confirmed structure fire at the old 84 Lumber site in Charles Town. Upon arrival of the first fire units they upgraded the box to include Company 3, and Company 5. A three-alarm was soon issues due to the size of the structure, this included units from Berkeley County. The fire heavily damaged the old 84 Lumber building at Route 340 and Patrick Henry Way in Charles Town, and the building did partially collapse.

The cause of the fire has been determined. It was caused by a welder igniting a birds nest with sparks. This was accidental. Fire personnel were on the scene for approximatly 4 hours.

Saturday, April 18th the Shepherdstown Fire Department along with Berkeley County Companies and Jefferson Company 2 responded to a number of brush fires along the rail road tracks in Jefferson and Berkeley Counties. It is believed that a train malfunction with the braking system causes hot metal to ignite brush along the railroad tracks. Fire Officials shut down the CSX railroad for approximately 2 hours while the numerous fires were being attended.
